Jim Manley is known for his warm, folksy style and for his lyrics that highlighted current social justice, peace, and ecological concerns. As a United Church of Christ pastor, he welcomed one and all, inviting people through word, sacrament, and song to sit down and become part of the family. His most widely known song, “Spirit,” is included in several denominational hymnals.

Jim was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts and raised in Reno, Nevada. He studied at Whittier College (BA 1962), Pacific School of Religion (MDiv 1966), and Claremont School of Theology (DMin 1976). Jim served as chaplain at Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii (1968–1978). He also served as pastor of United Church of Christ congregations in Fremont, California (1966–1968), San Marino, California (1978–1988), and Los Altos, California (1988–1999). Jim lives with his wife, Judy, at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California.
